Lund University
University has eight faculties,[17] with additional campuses in the cities  with 42,000 students[18] in 276 different  and around 2,200 separate courses. The University has some 600 partner universities in over 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the 21 network.[19]Two major facilities for materials research are University: MAX IV, which will be a world-leading  radiation laboratory and European, a European facility that will be home to the world’s most powerful neutron source. The university traditionally centers on the park adjacent to the Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering. In the early 20th century, the university had a student population as small as one thousand, consisting largely of upper-class pupils training to become civil servants, lawyers and doctors. In the coming decades it started to grow significantly, until it became one of the country's largest. In 1964 the social sciences were split from the Faculty of Humanities.  Institute of Technology was established in 1961 but was merged with  University eight years later. In recent years, University has been very popular among applicants to Swedish higher education institutions, both nationally[20] and internationally.[21][22] For studies starting in autumn 2012,  received 11,160 foreign master's applications from 152 countries, which was roughly one third of all international applications to university's facilities are mainly located in the small city of in about 15 km away from central  and 50 km from Copenhagen. The university's prominence and large student population have much impact on the city, effectively making it a university town. Over a hundred university buildings[24] scatter around town, most of them in an area covering more than 1 km², stretching towards the north-east from  park in the very  of town. Buildings in and around  include the main building,, the Historical Museum and the Academic Society's headquarters. The main library building is located in a park 400 meters to the north, followed by the large hospital complex. University has a satellite campus in nearby Sweden's third largest city. The Faculty of Fine and  Arts' three academies:  Art Academy, Academy of Music   Academy, are all located in . The city is also the location  Hospital, where  University performs a considerable amount of research and medical  University is among the most renowned institutions of higher learning in the Nordic countries and is commonly ranked within the top 100 in the world by the most influential ranking agencies.  was ranked 60th in the world in the 2014/ University Rankings.[40] In 2015, it ranked 90th in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings,[41]and in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, compiled by Shanghai  Tong University, it was in the 101-150 category. In the recent released National Taiwan University Ranking, L University is ranked 87th in the world for Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities 2015.[42]In 2011, Times Higher Education compiled a special world ranking based exclusively on reputation for teaching and research, where  University appeared in the 71-80 category.[43] In the same year,  issued world university rankings by subject,[44]placing  within the top 50 in environmental sciences, geography and area studies, physical sciences and civil and structural engineering. In 2014, the National Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ecuador , as a parameter for awarding scholarships, created a list of top Universities around the world placing  University in Top 1 in "Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics" [45] and Top 3 in both fields: "Information Technology and Communication" [46] and "Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction".[47]The 2013-2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings' Engineering and Technology table placing  University 78 around the world.,[48] in "art and Humanities" 74th,[49] in "Clinical, -clinical and Health" 77th,[50] in "Life Sciences" 67th,[51] and in "Physical Sciences" 57th. Academic Ranking of World Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences - 2013 placed to  University 76-100 category.[53]The 2015-2016  (University Ranking by Academic Performance) placed to University 87th in the world [54] with qualification A++.The 2015-16 Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed the university in 90th place worldwide.[55]Times Higher Education gives much importance to citations on their ranking. This has been  for undermining universities that do not use English as their primary language.[24] Citations and publications in a language different from English are harder to come across.[25] Thus, such a methodology is condemned for being inappropriate and not comprehensive enough.[26] A second important disadvantage for universities of non Anglo-Saxon tradition is that within the disciplines of social sciences and humanities the main tool for publications are books which are not or only rarely covered by citations records.[27]Times Higher Education has also been for its strong bias towards institutions that taught 'hard science' and had high quality output of research in these fields, often to the disadvantage of institutions more focused on other subjects like the social sciences and humanities. For instance in the former THE- World University Rankings was ranked 11th in the world in 2004 and 2005, but dropped to 66th and 67th in the 2008 and 2009 edition.[28] In January 2010, THE concluded that the method employed by , who conducted the survey on their behalf, was flawed in such a way that bias was introduced against certain institutions, .[29] A representative of Thomson Reuters, THE's new partner, commented on the controversy: " stood at only 67th in the last Times Higher Education- World University Rankings – some mistake surely? Yes, and quite a big one."[29] Nonetheless, after the change of data provider to Thomson Reuters the following year,  fell even further to 86th place, with the ranking described by a representative of Thomson Reuters as 'a fair reflection of their status as a world class university'.[30]  despite being ranked continuously near the top in its national rankings, has been placed below other British universities in the Times Higher Education World Rankings in recent years, other institutions such as Sciences Po have suffered due to the inherent methodology bias still used.
